Click Start ,search for cmd and open cmd.exe (if you use Windows XP then click on Run instead of typing in the search box, and if you use Windows Vista then right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator.)

Now type the following ipconfig /release and press Enter

When that completes then type ipconfig /renew and press Enter

Type Exit when done to close cmd.Fabio the computer guyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01232000258612364379noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8328449782358628336.post-77969185633817157242014-12-10T15:16:00.002+00:002014-12-10T15:18:45.467+00:00Fixed Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computerIf you try to search for Windows Updates and you are using Windows Vista and above you may get this error:
"Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer"

There are two fixes that seem to solve this problem the last one worked for me.

1. If it was caused by a corrupt windows update folder then we need to rename it and then allow windows update to create a new fresh folder (note you will have to install a lot of updates again)

First step is to deactivate the windows update service you can do this by clicking on start and in the run/search box type in cmd and then right click cmd and choose Run as Administrator.

When cmd opens type net stop wuauserv and press enter you will get a success message.

Leave cmd open for now you, can minimise it.
Lets go to My Computer and navigate to C:\Windows and find the folder named SoftwareDistribution,
right-click this folder and choose rename and name it SoftwareDistribution.old and press enter.

Next step is to go back to cmd and type the following net start wuauserv ,press enter and then type exit to close cmd for good.

You can restart the computer and see if it helped.

If you still have the same problem try the next procedure.

2.This involves updating the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver and you can download the file from here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02219204&cc=nl&lc=en&dlc=en&product
even though it's for HP , I have a Toshiba and it installed and worked fine since most laptops have the same Intel chipset.

Hope this helps anyone and good luck.

net stop wuauserv

This was a tricky problem even reinstalling firefox didnt really solve it and all the shortcuts pointed to the correct path and firefox was my default Internet Browser.
The correct solution was to fix the Windows OS Default File Association types

You can download them here:

I was using Windows Vista so I did all the registry fixes like .exe, .com etc and after logging off and on again all was resloved.
Sometimes it's not as simple as it looks.
There a many factors and precautions to to consider before you even put that screwdriver in your hand.
I will list 5 important things that you should know before you even attempt to repair your computer.

1.One of the most important things is to have a clean, clutter, hassle free workplace where you will be working on the computer.you need to place the side panels in one place ,computer parts and cables in another so make sure you have the space for it (and don't place it on the floor or carpet that's just silly.)
Also the right tools are handy to have too make sure the screwdrivers are the correct sizes and lengths too.
Using the correct tool for the job will make it much more pleasant.

2.ESD or ElectroStatic Discharge is how us humans can destroy and kill electronic components by just touching them.
Think of it as when rubbing your feet on the carpet and touching a metallic object like a door knob you receive a shock, though harmless to us can be deadly to the electronic components inside your computer (desktop or even laptop).
Before touching any component you have to either get an antistatic mat to place on your workspace ,ESD wrist strap to prevent you're body from sending any charge that will harm sensitive components.
If those items are not available then you can protect the components by touching anything metal on the computer case such as the power supply or chassis before touching anything electronic.
Remember to remove any fancy jewellery as well since this can cause ESD too.More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_discharge

3.Turn off all power to the computer and remove any external cables such as the power cord ,printers ,modems ,network cables ,printers as these devices can still be holding current and you don't want any current when working on the inside of a computer.

4.Backup ,Backup ,Backup.
This is very important if you are doing a software repair as opposed to a hardware (physical) repair.
cleaning viruses, messing around with important system files if you're not too experienced can cause a nightmare instead of a solution, and you don't want to do backups when it's in nightmare mode trust me.

5.Research before you start to try and fix your computer yourself, will you be able to do it ,do you have the expertise, will you be able to finish once you start ,research online to similar problems that others are experiencing and see if their solutions apply to you and if they do can you do it yourself?
Compare repair costs if you fix it yourself will it cost you more than to have a qualified technician fix it for you?

These are 5 of the things that one should consider before trying to fix their own computers at home or even at work.Sure there are many more out there but these are straight forward guidlines that need to be followed and considered.

If you try to fix your computer yourself then all I can say is
Good Luck.
This is usually caused by a service that is not starting automatically, to resolve this do the following steps:

Click on Start then type services in the search box and select it when it is shown.
When the services window opens scroll down until you find Shell Hardware Detection double click it and change it's start-up to Automatic , click OK and then close the services window and restart windows.

Autoplay should now work.

Only part of a readprocessmemory or write process memory request was
completed

The solution that worked for me is to type the following in the Run dialogue box:
sfc /scannow note: you will be asked to insert your Windows XP CD if errors are found.
If that doesn't solve it then a Windows XP repair install should also resolve it.
I found a solution that worked for me in the registry.
Open regedit then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ,System ,Setup and on the right pane change both AuditInProgress and FactoryPreInstallInProgress from (1) to (0) restart and problem solved.

Hope this helps someone else.Fabio the computer guyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01232000258612364379noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8328449782358628336.post-61119676635518427932011-08-29T18:46:00.006+01:002011-08-30T16:11:26.859+01:00Review of the uCertify 220-701 CompTIA A+ Essentials PrepKitAs a computer technician I like to stay up to date on technology and I like to test myself with the latest A+ exams.

I recently had a chance to use the uCertify - C220-701: CompTIA A+ Essentials prepkit which has over 824 practice questions and 300 study notes for the 2009 CompTIA A+ certification exam.
I like the format and layout of the practice test section, you can select pre-made practice tests, a final test when you are ready and finally an Adaptive test that is a simulation of the real CompTIA test, you can even create custom tests too which is really cool.
During the tests you can choose to start the test in either Test mode (answers shown at the end) or Learn mode (answers shown after each question) you can even bookmark, tag certain questions to review them later or discuss with another user.

The study material is good too with Study notes, study tips ,how to, articles, flash cards it really does prep you for the CompTIA exam so that you pass it with an A (A+ in this case :) ).
The article and study note sections are very informative and very easy to learn, some even have diagrams and screen shots to explain certain windows procedures since learning with pictures is always easier and much more fun.

There is a Test history section where you can check your results and review the questions that you got wrong.
The test readiness report gives you a report of all the tests that have been completed ,not yet completed ,failed, passed and from here you can even re-attempt any Test.
Take a look at the objective readiness report to find out if you really are ready for the CompTIA exam it lists the six objective groups and your passing percentage for each one ,if they are all over 95% then one can take the exam with a positive outlook.

Overall I liked the products features ,design ,layout and it does what it's supposed to do and that is pass the CompTIA A+ Essentials exam the first time.

After reading the steps listed on the Windows Live support page:
http://messenger-support.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8B3F39C76A8B853F!15940.entry
The option that worked for me was to uninstall Adobe flash player and Adobe shockwave player and then reinstall them.
You can do this by going to the Control Panel ,Add/Remove programs and uninstall them from there.
Or you can use the uninstall tool:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
The solution seems to be to use the built in Advanced Tag Editor in windows media player ,to do this open media player and click on the media library option then find your file that you want to edit and under the Title section right click on the song and choose Advanced Tag Editor ,editing should now be possible.

The following steps from Microsoft worked a treat for me ,first make sure that your CD ROM drive is the first boot device.

Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.

When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you have to use from the Recovery Console.

When you are prompted, type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.

At the command prompt, type bootcfg /list, and then press ENTER. The entries in your current Boot.ini file appear on the screen.

At the command prompt, type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER. This command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows NT installations, and then displays the results. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to add the Windows installations to the Boot.ini file. For example, follow these steps to add a Windows XP installation to the Boot.ini file:

When you receive a message that is similar to the following message, press Y:

Total Identified Windows Installs: 1

[1] C:\Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)

You receive a message that is similar to the following message:

Enter Load Identifier
This is the name of the operating system. When you receive this message, type the name of your operating system, and then press ENTER. This is either Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.

You receive a message that is similar to the following:

Enter OS Load options
When you receive this message, type /fastdetect, and then press ENTER

Type Exit and windows will load normally.

First of all make sure the Security tab is enabled ,for more info see how to enable the security tab in windows xp
Right-click on the file ,folder or drive that you want to take ownership of and click on Properties and then Security now click on Advanced and then click on the Owner tab.
In the Name list select your user name or click on Administrator and then click on OK.
I personally always click on send report because sometimes there is a solution to the error itself but for those who want to turn off this feature here is how to do it:
Right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop (or go to the System icon in the Control Panel)
Select Properties followed by the Advanced tab.
Now click on the Error Reporting tab and check the option to Disable error reporting ,click on OK and then OK again on the Advanced tab menu.Fabio the computer guyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01232000258612364379noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8328449782358628336.post-50253873137474138452009-09-07T15:49:00.000+01:002009-09-07T15:49:01.645+01:00how to disable the guest account in Windows XPIf you want to disable /turn off the guest account in Windows XP then do the following:
