When starting a Windows Vista computer you get a message saying that Windows Defender cannot be started and error code 0x800106ba is shown.
After much web searching and trying many options one thing I found worked for me.
Go to Control Panel then select System and Maintenance and then clicking Administrative Tools then finally select Services.
I scrolled down to Windows Defender service and to my surprise it was deactivated and stopped.
To fix this I double clicked that service to open it, then chose the option to start automatic on start up, then I was able to click on the Start service button.
I then clicked on Apply and Restarted the computer ,windows Defender started up fine.
Change your current antivirus to Panda Antivirus Pro 2010 and forget these problems.
Free trial period too :)

I'm glad to help you and anyone else.
Thank you for the solution. I am a senior lady and you have saved me alot of time and fustration.
Thank you so much, absolute legend. There are so many posts on other websites massively complicating the issue. You've certainly fixed it for me.
Wow - thanks so much. It was so easy and worked. I tried to search for the answer online in other areas, without success.
thnk u so so much because you it worked out 4 me....brilliant...thnks
Thank U so much your advice solved my problem. "much relieved - England"
Thank you ever so much for solving this problem tried loads of websites and even microsoft and windows and all failed but yours worked perfectly and was simple thank you
Cheers solved a headache!
Worked! But I know McAfee caused Windows Defender to stop. I had read that there isn't a need to run Defender if you have McAfee. I just got a subscription for a new Dell laptop (two years). Is that true?
If the Mcafee has a two year subscription then it is a more advanced program than Windows Defender especially if it has internet security .
Many new computers come with a trial version of Mcafee which last for 60 to 90 days and then you have to purchase it ,in that case you can purchse it or use Defender with a free Antivirus program like AVG ,I recomend purchasing Mcafee if you can afford it.
i have had the windows defender error since installing mcafee, and have searched the web for a solution, even microsoft couldnt solve it! then came across your post, problem solved easily!!!! thank you so much,
Man, thank you so much. Your instructions were easily understood and simple to do. Garyzster
I too recently installed a new subscription of McAfee. And, I experienced the same error message each time I signed on. I searched Microsoft and lots of other sites for assistance.Yours, however, was the most successful and easy to use. Thank you for assistance. J.Ren
This also happened to me, updated Mcafee that was about to expire and Wamo, Defender wouldn't work. Spent an entire day trying to fix, purchased windows fix and nothing $54.70 later and I still couldn't acess program in every way I tried, but I finally found this site. I must say thank you very, very much, this fixed it! Very helpful, keep up the great work! Thank you again
Friend you are my new hero. This simple problem was driving me crazy, and so many false and unhelpful posts. I appreciate you posting your clear and easy to follow solution and now that problem is gone!
Thanks for all your kind words ,I should start charging for this lol.

thank you for your help.
Fabio, you are an absolute star - like a lot of others I'd done the rounds of assorted forums which offered deeply complex solutions which I couldn't get to sort the problem; yours went straight to the heart of the matter. Genius.
(another whose machine was ok until McAfee installed, by the way)
Thanks, following your instructions got rid of that error for me.
Thanks...it's almost a year after your post and you are still solving problems for people. Much obliged!
Yup, a year later and saved me a lot more fruitless searching online. Spent an hour that didn't work before I saw this post. Thanks so much!
It is nearly a year isn't it.
Many people seem to be having this problem it's a compatibility issue with these internet security programs and Windows Defender.
I personally like Panda Antivirus ,it doesn't hog your system and works well.
Problem solved thanks to this simple solution.

Help, please tellme what I'm doing wrong? I'm using Vista and don't have System & Maintenance in the control panel. I have system, but it doesn't have services listed. I am very computer literate, but this is driving me bonkers.
I think I got it. I went to administrative tools, which I had already done three times and was able to start Defender, but got the error every time I restarted my computer. This time I changed from manual to automatic. Keeping my fingers crossed.
And .......what happend?
Its actually, open contol panel, double click on ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, then double click on services, double click on windows defender, click start, change manual to automatic, apply, and ok. Great job Fabio...everybody else had it wrong!!! THANK YOU
Thanks for sharing that information.
In your case you are using the classic view in Control Panel so yes you have to go to Administrative tools first.
Thank you so much!!!! Been looking for a solution to this problem for the longest. I too just recently installed McAfee to my Dell laptop.
Thank you so much. Since installing McAfee on laptop and pc, it stopped working which meant I could not get into my start up menu.
It's 5am and I can now relax!!
Same problem as the rest with Vista and installing Mc Afee.
All the other sites did my head in !! your simple guidance solved it for me too .

Thank you so much - that was easy. Like others I have looked at other websites and nothing worked. YOU ROCK! :)
I had this same problem with " windows defender " error message 0x00106ba when logging on to Windows Vista . I narrowed the problem to internet explorer 8 . I have explorer 8 on 2 of 3 of my computers all with OS Windows Vista . I upgraded to explorer 8 on my desktop and one of my laptops . The second laptop still has explorer 7 . With explorer 7 I don't get the " Windows defender " error message that I get with the machines that have explorer 8 . I usesd a registry cleaner on all 3 of my machines . I got rid of the defender error messages .
I have McAfee on all my computers but as I said " Windows defender " error messages materialized on the machines upgraded with explorer 8 . No problems with McAfee and explorer 7 . Glad to see that you were able to get rid of the problems .
All the Microsoft tips faoled to solve the issue.
You have the solution. It worked the first try.
Thanks
Glad you found Internet explorer 8 was the problem.
Some computers have different ways to solve this problem but all lead to the same root I suppose.

Thank you very much. I searched the internet for ages and found lots of suggestions that did not work. this worked straight away and was easy to follow.

I recently acquired a new pc with vista. This problem has been driving me mad for days with no apparent solution until I found yours.A thousand thanks!! Strange MS hasn't taken it up??!
Cheers m8, FINALLY something that worked for me... :)
Outstanding. That was easy. Thank you very much.
I can't solve this problem, when I go control panel, then system and maintenance, then administrative tools, and here is nothing, I tryed to uninstall windows defender and windows updates, and I can't because there are not in to the programs.
Another way to launch the Services Applet is to type in services.msc in the search box.
Click Start ,Search
It's the square box just above the Start globe (It looks more like a run box)
I did search MS site for a month trying to find the solution to this problem, finally got it right from you,THANKS A LOT.
OMG! i'd been trying to fix this problem for like a month now...lol I had spent a LOT of hours doing this and that and following "instructions" on sites that (ie. dell, microsoft, etc) that said i needed to update my drivers...BS is what i now say =) Thank you so very much!
Yet another grateful thank you. I've been struggling with this for 2 months and the side benefit is that I now know about Services.
thank you so much, that has been driving me mad. your solution was easy to follow and it worked. brilliant.
Thanks Fabio,
Wonder if this mcafee update also caused my java use on yahoo games to not connect w/ their games server. Your defender fix worked!!!, how about this java connection w/ yahoo?
tia,djk
Want to make me work do ya? lol
Do you get any error ,on the yahoo page?
Do you get any popup messages from Mcafee asking to allow or deny the application?
Thank you so much. None of the options provided on other websites worked, but this simple fix worked first time. Many thanks!
Nice job Fabio. Easy solution. You're blue chip.

FANTASTIC! You deserve a metal of honor my friend! Nicely done in helping all of us solve this difficult yet simple (thanks to you) problem!
I went thru the process you described and checked - Windows defender is on and automatic - local service. but it starts and then stops.
I really am just wanting to stop some programs from running automatically when windows starts.
Instructions are: windows defender - tools-software explorer-in category click startup programs -disable and Yes. Can I get at these another way and forget Windows Defender?
You can use the msconfig program by typing it in the run dialogue box in the Start menu.
Go to the start up section and uncheck what you don't want loading ,just remember to leave your antivirus as a startup device.
help! i followed the steps and when i got to the service folder, windows defender was already on automatic, but when i click the start service, it says it can't start error 0x80070003: the system cannot find the path specified. is there any way to fix it?
Hi
Try changing it from Automatic to Manual ,click Apply then restart the computer and then change it from Manual to Automatic and see if the service will start.
I tried your way, tried several times information very useful, when I went to add/remove programmmes it gave me an option to repair Windows Defender which I did and a very satisfactory result. Thank you very much.
As an update to someone's earlier post I also checked by box and it said it was set to automatic and as I said in my earlier post (I run XP) I went to add/remove programmes which when I went to remove said I could repair which I did and it did work, some people may be able to do this as and either or. Again thank you.
I tried it but it still says the same thing, do you know how to fix the path or how to detele it so i can re-install it?
Are you running windows XP and what is the exact error you receive.
Windows Defender cannot be started and error code 0x800106ba is shown. I am running windows XP.
As a solution that someone with the same problem posted earlier on go to Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel then select Windows Defender and click on remove.
Choose the repair option instead of uninstall.
See if it works for you.
Yours was the first post that helped me get to the right place, but I still cannot get Defender to start. It was running before I installed Microsoft Security Essentials, but stopped after that, and when I try to restart it I get the message that some services won't run if they are not in use by other services or programs. Any thoughts on this?
Hi
Have a look here on some microsoft Security Essentials Faqs:

I tried the various fixes listed and received the following
the windows defender service on local computer started and then stopped.some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.
Oh, I'm running vista 32 bit system with symantec if it makes a difference. I looked for a repair feature and was unable to find one.
Hi try the steps that are described here:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/218830-windows-defender-fix-unable-turn.html
Let us know if it worked.
If that doesnt solve it try disabling Norton and then try to start Windows defender service again.
